Skid Steer Track Conversion Systems: Understanding Your Options

A wheeled skid steer loader is one of the most versatile machines on a jobsite, but there are times when additional traction, flotation, and stability are needed. Track conversion systems allow owners to transform a standard skid steer into a more capable machine by replacing traditional tires with a track-based system.

Track conversions can improve performance in challenging conditions such as mud, sand, soft soil, snow, slopes, landscaping, forestry, and rough terrain. Several different conversion options are available, each with its own advantages depending on the machine, application, and operating conditions.

Loegering VTS Track System

The Loegering VTS (Versatile Track System) is one of the most recognized skid steer track conversion systems ever developed. The VTS replaces the wheel-and-tire assembly with a dedicated track undercarriage that attaches directly to the skid steer.

The VTS uses a rigid track frame with a drive sprocket, rollers, idlers, and a suspension system designed specifically for skid steer applications.

This design provides increased flotation, improved traction, better stability on uneven ground, and reduced ground pressure compared to standard tires.

A major advantage of the VTS system is that it allows many owners to convert an existing wheeled skid steer into a tracked machine without purchasing a dedicated compact track loader.

The VTS systems have been discontinued for many years, however thousands are still in service. Owners still need information on maintenance, repairs, and replacement parts. This site is dedicated to helping VTS owners keep their equipment working.

Over-the-Tire (OTT) Track Systems

Over-the-tire (OTT) tracks are one of the simplest ways to add track capability to a wheeled skid steer. These systems install over the existing tires and are available in rubber, steel, or hybrid designs.

Advantages:

Lower initial cost
Easy installation and removal
Allows switching between tires and tracks
Works well for occasional use

Considerations:

Adds weight and width
Can increase tire wear
Performance depends on tire condition and inflation
May not provide the same flotation or ride quality as a dedicated undercarriage

OTT systems are commonly used for landscaping, snow removal, dirt work, and occasional muddy conditions and offered by a multitude of manufacturers.

Mattracks

As of February 2024, Mattracks released that its RT125 TC track model is now approved for wheeled skid steers with wheelbases 48 in. or greater.

The RT125 TC already is being used by many customers on articulated loaders, riding trenchers and the Bobcat Toolcat. Supporting up to 12,500 lbs., the Mattracks four track conversion system increases traction by 10-fold while maintaining the same maneuverability and zero turn ability as with tires, the manufacturer states.
