How to Convert a Skid Steer to Tracks (Loegering VTS Track System)

If you've searched for "how to convert my skid steer to a track machine," you've come to the right place.

Converting a wheeled skid steer to tracks is one of the best upgrades you can make if you regularly work in mud, snow, sand, soft ground, or uneven terrain. Instead of trading your machine for an expensive compact track loader (CTL), many owners choose to install a Loegering Versatile Track System (VTS).

If your skid steer has at least 50 horsepower, a VTS conversion may be an excellent option.

Can You Convert a Skid Steer to Tracks? - Absolutely.

Thousands of skid steers have been converted to tracks using OTT (over the tire tracks), the Loegering VTS, and now Mattracks.

For a complete breakdown of available options, check out our Track Conversion Options Guide.

In our opinion, the absolute best performing system for the money is the Loegering Versatile Track System (VTS).  Rather than installing over-the-tire tracks, the VTS replaces your wheels with dedicated track assemblies that dramatically improve traction, flotation, and stability.

For many owners, it's the closest thing to owning a compact track loader without purchasing another machine.

What Is the Loegering VTS?

The Loegering Versatile Track System (VTS) is a complete track conversion that replaces all four wheels on your skid steer.

Each system includes:

  • Dedicated track frames

  • Heavy-duty hub assemblies

  • Torsion Front Suspension

  • Rubber tracks

  • Drive sprockets

  • Rollers and idlers

The independent suspension works to provides a smoother ride than rigid track machines or over-the-tire tracks, while delivering excellent traction in difficult conditions.

The Loegering VTS was offered as a factory-authorized option on Caterpillar skid steers for a number of years, giving CAT customers the ability to purchase a new machine equipped with a Loegering VTS directly through their Caterpillar dealer.  That OEM relationship is one of the reasons these systems remain so highly regarded today.

The VTS Is Discontinued... But Still Easy to Find

Loegering no longer manufactures the Variable Track System.  Fortunately, that hasn't made them difficult to own.

Thousands of VTS systems remain in service across North America, and used systems can still be found relatively easily through equipment dealers, online marketplaces, auctions, and private sellers.

Replacement parts are also available for many systems, allowing owners to continue rebuilding and maintaining them for years to come.

We specialize in helping owners keep these legendary track systems operating by providing:

  • Replacement parts

  • Technical information

  • Rebuild guides

  • Identification assistance

Is My Skid Steer Compatible?

Generally, your skid steer should have at least 50 horsepower to operate a Loegering VTS.  Make sure you're purchasing the right frame size for your machine's power level.

The VTS was produced for many popular skid steers, including:

  • Bobcat

  • Case

  • John Deere

  • Gehl

  • Mustang

  • New Holland

  • And many others

However, choosing the correct system isn't as simple as matching the machine manufacturer.

Different machines use different:

  • Frame families

  • Track lengths

  • Mounting configurations

That's why we recommend starting with our Loegering VTS Identification Guide before purchasing a used system.

Why Convert Instead of Buying a Compact Track Loader?

A new compact track loader can easily cost $60,000–$100,000 or more.

If you already own a dependable skid steer, converting it to tracks allows you to keep the machine you know while gaining many of the advantages of a dedicated track loader.

Benefits of a Loegering VTS

  • Outstanding traction in mud, snow, and loose soil

  • Lower ground pressure and improved flotation

  • Increased stability on hillsides

  • Eliminates flat tires

  • Can be converted back to wheels if needed

  • Often far less expensive than purchasing another machine

For many operators, a VTS completely changes where—and when—they can use their skid steer.

Things to Consider Before Converting

Like any equipment upgrade, the VTS isn't perfect. While most owners feel the advantages far outweigh the drawbacks, it's worth considering a few trade-offs before purchasing a system.

Additional Weight

A VTS system adds a significant amount of weight compared to wheels and tires.

For most work, this is actually a benefit because it improves traction, stability, and pushing power. However, the additional weight may require a heavier trailer or tow vehicle when transporting your machine.

Replacement Parts Can Be Expensive

Although replacement parts are still available, certain components—such as hubs, sprockets, bearings, and rubber tracks—can be costly. Buying a well-maintained system can save money in the long run.

Slight Reduction in Travel Speed

Most operators notice that a VTS-equipped machine loses approximately 1.5 mph of top travel speed compared to running on tires.

For most applications, this isn't a significant drawback, but it's worth noting if your work requires frequent travel over long distances.

Increased Load on the Drivetrain

Because the VTS provides substantially more traction than tires, it also places greater loads on the skid steer's drivetrain.

Under normal operation, this isn't typically an issue. However, operators who aggressively shock-load the machine have reported breaking rear drive chains.

Like any machine, proper operation and routine maintenance go a long way toward maximizing reliability.

Are the Downsides Worth It?

Ask almost anyone who has spent time operating a Loegering VTS, and you'll hear the same thing:

The benefits far outweigh the drawbacks.

The increase in traction, flotation, stability, and overall capability often transforms where and how a skid steer can be used.

Installing a Loegering VTS

Installing a VTS system is well within the capabilities of most mechanically inclined owners.

The basic process consists of:

  1. Remove all four wheels.

  2. Install the VTS assemblies.

  3. Torque all lug nuts to 190ft/lbs.

  4. Adjust track tension turnbuckle - then re-tighten front idler bolts to 376ft/lbs.

  5. Test drive the machine and perform a final inspection.

Most installations can be completed in a single afternoon using standard shop tools and lifting equipment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I still buy a new Loegering VTS?

No. Production has been discontinued.

However, used systems remain readily available and are commonly bought and sold throughout North America.

Can a used VTS be rebuilt?

Absolutely.

Many used systems simply require replacement bearings, seals, rollers, sprockets, or hub components before returning to service.

We publish detailed rebuild guides and source common parts needed to keep these systems running.

Are replacement parts still available?

Yes.  The Loegering product line (including the VTS) is still supported by the ASV / Yanmar dealer network.

In addition, we are working to source and supply commonly needed replacements for older, discontinued Loegering VTS system part numbers.
